5 Card Stud Poker – Introduction

Five Card Stud Poker is widely believed to be the oldest form of stud poker and its roots go back to the time of the American Civil War. Despite the fact that the 7 card version of stud poker is now played more often, Five Card Stud Poker is still an extremely popular game.

The exact origins of poker are uncertain, but the game does have a long history. Some believe that card games were originally developed in China over 1,000 years ago, and then spread throughout the world.

Some claim that poker developed from a 16th century Persian card game known as “As Nas”, but others believe that the game derived from more modern European card games such as the French card game “poque”, the Spanish card game “primero”, the German card game “pochspiel” and the English game of “Brag”.

However, the modern game of poker was developed in America. French settlers in New Orleans during the nineteenth century appear to have introduced poker to the US, with the game continuing to develop and become increasingly popular since that time.

Stud Poker is believed to have been first played by cowboys in Ohio and Indiana and was originally known as “Stud Horse”. It became more widely known as it grew popular with the armed forces in the Second World War and when the war ended, casinos began to offer it. The original version of Stud Poker was Five Card Stud Poker. The Seven Card version developed from it in the twentieth century.

Despite the image of poker progressing from that of a game played on riverboats by cheats and rogues to a game of skill and celebrity, no-one can doubt that the television boom in recent years, together with the introduction of online poker has given the game a universal appeal.

Even though Texas Hold'em Poker is the poker variation most often shown on television, 5 Card Stud Poker has a good following and is a very enjoyable form of poker.

The aim of Five Card Stud Poker is to make the best hand out of the 5 cards you are dealt. Only two of your cards are dealt face-down with the other three dealt face-up, meaning that all players can see them. This means that 5 Card Stud Poker is a game of skill and nerve as you need to make or bluff the best hand possible to clear up and win the pot!
