Until the recent TV coverage boom in poker helped Texas Hold'em to become the most popular type of game, 7 Card Stud Poker was number one to the poker player. The 7 card version of Stud Poker is a variation of the hugely influential 5 Card Stud Poker game which was created around the time of the American Civil War.
The exact origins of poker are uncertain, but the game does have a long history. Some believe that card games were originally developed in China over 1,000 years ago, and then spread throughout the world.
Some claim that poker developed from a 16th century Persian card game known as As Nas, but others believe that the game derived from more modern European card games such as the French card game poque, the Spanish card game primero, the German card game pochspiel and the English game of Brag.
However, the modern game of poker was developed in America. French settlers in New Orleans during the nineteenth century appear to have introduced poker to the US, and the game has continued to develop and become increasingly popular since that time.
Stud Poker is believed to have been first played by cowboys in Ohio and Indiana and was originally known as Stud Horse. It became more widespread when it became popular with the armed forces in the Second World War and, when the war ended, casinos began to offer it. The original version of Stud Poker was Five Card Stud Poker. However, Seven Card Stud Poker began to be played in the twentieth century which became popular due to the number of cards that were dealt face-up, giving players a good indication of their opponents' hands.
The aim of 7 Card Stud Poker is to make the best five-card hand out of the seven cards available. The cards dealt include 3 hole cards (cards dealt face-down) and 4 cards which are turned face-up for all to see. 7 Card Stud Poker offers players many betting opportunities and can result in large pots, but the fun comes from the fact that everyone can see a large part of every other player's hand. This means that Seven Card Poker is a game of betting skill, nerve and the occasional bluff!
